In a decisive step reflecting its dedication to sustainability and growth, Ryanair, the Irish low-cost airline, has announced adjustments to its operations at Rome’s airports due to rising airport fees.
The airline disclosed on Thursday that it would be pulling one aircraft from Rome Fiumicino and moderating its planned expansion at Rome Ciampino.
This decision comes amid rising concerns regarding soaring airport costs, with predictions of a 15 percent increase at Fiumicino by 2028.
At Ciampino, the expected fee hike is a staggering 44 percent, alongside a rise in passenger taxes that will take effect on April 1.
Challenges at Ciampino
The challenges at Ciampino are further compounded by restrictions on flight numbers, predominantly due to noise regulations.
These limitations hinder Ryanair’s ability to serve its customers effectively and restrict connectivity, which is vital for tourism and job opportunities in Italy, particularly in Rome.
Improved air connectivity is especially important in light of the upcoming Jubilee year, which is set to attract a massive influx of visitors.
Support for Tourism
With the Jubilee in 2025 estimated to bring over 30 million tourists to Rome, Eddie Wilson, a top executive at Ryanair, urged government officials to double Ciampino’s daily flight cap from 65 to 130.
He also expressed the need to reconsider the proposed increases in passenger taxes at the country’s major airports.
Moreover, Ryanair is eager to support Rome’s tourism industry.
The airline suggested that airport authorities should keep current fee levels unchanged at both Ciampino and Fiumicino through 2028.
If these proposals come to fruition, Ryanair is prepared to invest an impressive $4 billion in Italy, potentially introducing 40 new aircraft and accommodating over 20 million passengers annually on 250 new routes.
Ryanair’s Position in Italy
Ryanair is a significant player in Italy’s aviation scene, with estimates indicating that more than half of domestic flight passengers in 2023 opted for the airline, reinforcing its position as a leader in the Italian market.
With a focus on connectivity and growth, Ryanair is poised for a promising future in the vibrant city of Rome!
